Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Empire, Alabama. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is facilitated by our nationwide network of facilities, enabling seamless hair testing across cities. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is generally required. Hair tests can be customized for substance, alcohol/ETG detection, among other options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have increasingly replaced traditional drug testing methods. This test is preferred by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary services. Key advantages include an extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days, a supervised collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for drug detection within the last five days, urine testing remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an essential method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term archive of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer an alcohol and drug detection period of up to roughly 90 days. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s preliminary processing into the lab’s system. This step includes checking the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry absent from the digital chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a budget-friendly method to discard drug use in most samples, confirmation of a positive screening is imperative for court acceptability. Any presumptively positive screenings necessitate additional confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from the hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process as required. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Cheating is highly improbable: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Detectability in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Costs more: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentration in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Despite the colloquial term "hair follicle tests", the analysis concerns the hair shaft, not the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out over urine tests in Empire, AL for several reasons. Its extended detection period surpasses the limited days covered by urine tests. While urine tests provide short-term results, hair testing offers a more comprehensive view into an individual's drug usage history.

Employers and legal authorities prioritize hair tests as they are harder to tamper with than urine tests. This added reliability gives hair follicle tests an edge in maintaining strict drug-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

In Empire, AL, hair follicle testing's ability to detect drug use extending up to 90 days offers a broad chronological perspective. This is crucial for employers looking for a detailed understanding of potential hires or employees' substance use patterns.

An extended detection window makes hair follicle tests invaluable. Companies benefit by getting an all-encompassing insight into an individual’s history, rather than just a limited view provided by other tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Empire, AL, provide enhanced tamper-resistance, ensuring sample integrity. Unlike urine samples, which can be easily adulterated, hair testing offers a dependable method for genuine results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
