Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle testing for drugs in Dothan, Alabama. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we offer services at our testing facilities located nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over traditional urine analysis. Organizations and individuals subject to strict anti-drug policies often choose this method due to its extended detection capabilities, which reach up to 90 days. Despite its precision, urine testing remains unparalleled for assessing recent drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The hair fibers entrap biomarkers, offering an extended history of drugs and alcohol use. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can show a detection timeline of up to around three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is advisable. If scalp hair is not present, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specify the scalp hair area. Other hair forms (like facial and axillary) are termed as body hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary integration of a sample into lab systems. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes additional data input not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid check for potential drug abuse. Although cost-efficient to eliminate most samples from drug use suspicion, a positive screen needs confirmation for court validity. All presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further validation.

In cases of presumptive positives post-Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and then readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests highly complex to administer.

Any positive screening needs confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample goes through a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: It highlights a drug use trend over time, rather than current consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color, alongside personal hair growth rates, can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the debate of hair follicle versus urine drug testing, hair tests stand out for their superior detection accuracy and reliability in Dothan, AL. While urine tests are limited to short detection windows, hair testing offers a comprehensive assessment over an extended period. This makes hair testing a preferred choice among employers seeking a more detailed analysis of potential substance use.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing presents a significant advantage for employers in Dothan, AL. Unlike urine tests with limited time frames, hair analysis goes back up to 90 days, offering a thorough view of an individual's drug use history. This long window makes hair testing ideal for evaluating ongoing patterns of substance use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Dothan, AL, are a tamper-resistant method ensuring reliable results. Unlike urine samples that can be easily altered or tampered with, hair analysis provides a foolproof system. Its resistance to cheating makes it a trusted option for secure and credible drug testing, assuring both employers and participants of its integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
