Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance tests in Clinton, Alabama. If a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis and operates testing facilities across the nation that can conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair or body hair can be employed. Hair analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for additional testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common means for drug analysis. Many businesses, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle testing is employed by zero-tolerance employers, legal institutions, and for court-mandated individuals. The main advantage of hair analysis is its prolonged detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision and challenging to tamper with, yet for substances used in the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by entrapping biomarkers within the structure of the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs that extends up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to obtain, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily mailed.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or analyses surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample remains sealed and was transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening represents a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen result must be substantiated for it to be legally admissible. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result during the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of all positive screening outcomes is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a more limited detection window.
  • Resistance to fraud: It is notably challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Divergences in results: Variables like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.

This is by far the easiest

This is by far the easiest way to get my lab work ordered and paid for. The phone calls are short and to the point. They don’t try to push extra sales on you and when I walk in to the clinic I simply show my donor pass and with in a matter of minutes I’m done. I will continue to use ADT in the future.
