In Atmore, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle testing services. Specializing in this type of testing, we have centers nationwide, offering testing for drugs and alcohol, including ETG. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required, and a variety of substances can be detected based on test configuration.

Increasingly, hair follicle testing is preferred for drug screening by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals due to its reliability over conventional urine tests. This method aligns with zero-tolerance policies and offers a detection window of up to 90 days through an observed collection process, making it highly secure against tampering. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Using hair as a testing medium is now regarded as a significant approach to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-duration record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It’s best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should there be no scalp hair present, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. While discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other kinds of hair (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases within the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial management of a sample into the lab’s systems. It covers verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody procedure.

Screening is a preliminary swift examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening demands confirmation to be admissible legally. Any samples initially positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample appears initially positive during the Screening phase, more hair is utilized from the starting specimen to prep for Extraction. This step involves removing drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other procedures (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most challenging procedures to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples found initially positive undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer appraisal window.
  • Hard to deceive: Attempts to manipulate a hair drug test are challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug consumption across time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Can't identify recent intake: It needs about 5-7 days before drugs become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically entails higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines the hair strand and not the scalp’s underlying hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
