Selecting the Ideal Drug Testing Panel for You

Drug testing panels specify the drugs being assessed. Common panels include 5-panel, 10-panel, and 12-panel tests, though customized options are available.

Defining a Drug Test

A drug test involves analyzing a biological sample like urine, hair, blood, breath, sweat, or saliva to detect specific parent drugs or metabolites. Key uses include identifying steroids in sports, drug use by employees or parolees, and alcohol detection by police. Breathalyzers are common for BAC (blood alcohol content), while urinalysis prevails in workplaces and sports. Other methods differ in accuracy, sensitivity, and detection times. Additionally, a drug test may be used for quantitative measurements to promote safe drug use.

Can Passive Smoke Inhalation Cause a Marijuana False Positive?

Passive inhalation from being around marijuana smokers is unlikely to result in a positive test, due to lab cutoff levels being higher than potential passive exposure levels.

Other test discrepancies might suggest false negatives or sample tampering. For example,

  • Low creatinine lab values may suggest urine dilution, either via excessive water consumption before testing or directly adding water to a sample.
  • Creatinine levels often work with specific gravity measurements to check for dilution. Testing centers may dye toilet water to prevent sample dilution.
  • Subjects attempting to tamper via enzyme addition often change urine pH, which is also checked.

How Long Do Drugs Remain Detectable?

The detection period, or look-back timeframe, varies based on factors such as:

  • Drug amount taken
  • Frequency of use
  • Drug type
  • Individual's metabolic rate and overall health
  • Fluid consumption post-ingestion
  • Physical activity after consumption
  • Genetic differences affecting drug response
